The word “metaverse” was one of the most searched terms in 2021 and the proposal is already considered the next big technological shift in digital media. Those who seek constant innovation know that being at the forefront of this transformation can be a great differentiator to stand out in the market.

The numbers are promising. According to data released by Strategy Analytics, Meta is expected to generate around R$42 billion by 2026.

In several sectors, big brands, such as Nike, Microsoft and Itaú, are already working on the Meta. Therefore, the starting gun has been fired and, as in every race, whoever starts first has an advantage.

It is true that Mark Zuckerberg's statement about changing Facebook's name to Meta caused some surprise and uproar. However, it is important to know that the concept is nothing new.

Apparently, the term “metaverse” was first used in 1992 by writer Neal Stephenson. Inspired by the cyberpunk movement, the novelist wrote the science fiction book Snow Crash . In it, the protagonist, a pizza delivery man, lived a parallel life in the virtual reality game called Metaverse .

Now, thirty years later, the concept is back to revolutionize the media and digital strategies .

The gaming industry is certainly a pioneer in terms of virtual reality . Games like Second Life , a huge success in the early 2000s, already explored the concept. In this virtual world, people interacted through their avatars, participated in shows and other events, among many other possibilities.

Supposedly, the game's success was not maintained due to difficulties in implementing a digital economy that guaranteed solid forms of monetization within Second Life . But this scenario has been changing with technological advances, a fact attested by the game Fortnite , from Epic Games, which moved more than 5 billion in 2020.

Taking this history into account, the metaverse is nothing more than the evolution of virtual and augmented reality, associated with the digital economy and increasingly integrated into real life . To understand better, let's discuss these fundamental points in more detail.
